Vista Fire Rescue is proud to launch the Safe & Sound Smoke Alarm Installation Program—a free service designed to help prevent fire-related injuries and deaths by providing smoke alarm installations and in-home fire safety education to Vista’s most at-risk residents.

This program is available at no cost to:

• Older adults

• Individuals with limited financial resources

• Residents living in older or high-risk housing units

Why Smoke Alarms Matter

Fires are a leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in the U.S. Over 50% of home fire deaths occur in houses without working smoke alarms—often due to missing, dead, or disconnected batteries. (Source: National Fire Protection Association, 2025)

You may have as little as 2 minutes to escape a fire once it starts. Modern furnishings and materials burn faster, giving you less time to react. (Source: Close Before You Doze)

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips

To ensure your alarms work when you need them:

1. Replace alarms every 10 years. Check the manufacture date—even if it still “works.”

2. Test monthly or follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Replace all batteries regularly—even in hardwired models or if the alarm isn’t chirping.

4. Never paint a smoke alarm. Paint can block sensors and prevent operation.

Proper Placement Matters

• Install one alarm in each bedroom, in the hallway outside bedrooms, and on every level of your home.

• Avoid placing alarms near kitchens, fireplaces, or wood stoves to reduce false alarms.

• Install alarms at the top of each stairwell—smoke rises quickly.

• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting and spacing.
