New Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps Released

Cal Fire has published updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps to help communities like Vista better understand and prepare for wildfire threats. This is the first major update to the maps since 2007 and reflects advancements in fire science, local climate data, and modeling technology used to assess fire behavior.

The FHSZ maps rate the wildfire hazard in a given area based on how likely a fire is to occur and how intense it could become. These maps are not property-specific but are used to classify areas into three general hazard categories:

  • Moderate Fire Hazard

  • High Fire Hazard

  • Very High Fire Hazard

Why This Matters to Vista

These newly revised maps play a vital role in:

  • Highlighting potential wildfire hazards throughout our region

  • Setting the framework for building codes and safety measures

  • Supporting fire-resistant construction practices and property upkeep
