Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez was elected to Vista City Council in 2020 and represents the District 3 neighborhoods. She was born and raised in Vista and is a first generation college graduate. Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez served as an Americorp where she coordinated volunteers and supported people with disabilities. She has experience working with local non-profit organizations and providing social services and substance abuse treatment for people experiencing homelessness. Her work in local government includes initiating the overnight Safe Parking Program for people sleeping in their cars, spearheading the removal of toxic pesticides from City parks, and implementing traffic calming infrastructure on neighborhood streets.
Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez leads regionally by serving on the Board of Directors for Clean Energy Alliance (CEA) and the Board of Directors for the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). She also represents the City of Vista on the Housing Committee for the League of California Cities.
