Dan O'Donnell, Deputy Mayor & City Councilmember
District 4

2026: Deputy Mayor
Term: 2022-2026

Dan O’Donnell proudly serves on the Vista City Council as Deputy Mayor and is dedicated to preserving and strengthening the community he calls home. He brings a thoughtful, community-focused approach to local governance, emphasizing collaboration, accountability, and long-term planning that reflects the values of Vista residents.

Dan is a devoted husband and father. He and his wife, Allie, are delighted to raise their two young sons, Caleb and Jacob, in Vista. Their family also includes their golden retriever, Ari, and cat, Pippa, who keep life lively at home. Being a parent has deepened his commitment to ensuring Vista remains a safe, vibrant, and family friendly community for generations to come.

During his time in public service, Dan has championed local control and fiscal responsibility, consistently opposing tax and fee increases while advocating for smart investments in the city’s future. His priorities include expanding parks and open space, improving critical infrastructure, strengthening public safety through increased support for first responders, supporting local business, and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Vista residents.

When not attending council meetings or engaging with constituents, Dan enjoys spending time with his family and remaining actively involved in the community.

A strong advocate for community engagement, he has hosted more town halls than all other councilmembers combined, reflecting his commitment to listening to residents and incorporating their input into decisions that affect quality of life.

As a City Councilmember, Dan has been instrumental in several key initiatives, including:

  • Inclusionary Housing: Implemented policies to cap rents on new apartment developments, ensuring affordable housing for residents.
  • Protected Bike Lanes: Advocated for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists through the establishment of protected bike lanes.
  • Complete Street Crosswalks: Installed crosswalks at Longhorn and Sycamore for the safety of students at Rancho Buena Vista High School.
  • Infrastructure Improvements: Facilitated the construction of sidewalks along Sunset Drive, speed humps to reduce cut through traffic, and a traffic light at Dawson and Melrose.
  • Homelessness Solutions: Secured $5 million in state funding for a Homeless Navigation Center.
  • Local Business: Streamlined the permitting process for live entertainment and worked in collaboration with local businesses to create a wayfinding sign program for Vista.
  • Public Safety Enhancements: Supported the addition of a new Deputy, 12 EMTs, three ambulances, and secured additional resources for the Senior Volunteer Patrol.
  • Senior Services: Increased funding for the Gloria McClellan Senior Center.
  • Parks/Open Space: Secured land at 536 Matagual for a future park site. Worked with Vista Unified School District to provide practice fields for Vista Little League.

Dan is committed to putting the community first and is dedicated to engaging residents in the decision-making process.

“I am willing to speak with everyone because, whether we agree or disagree, I believe we all have good ideas that need to be shared.”
