Heavy Rain and High Winds Forecast for Christmas Eve

Post Date:12/22/2025 8:47 PM

A powerful Pacific storm is forecast to arrive in San Diego County beginning late Christmas Eve, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potentially hazardous travel conditions through Christmas Day and beyond.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm could drop 3 to 4 inches of rain in some areas by Christmas night, increasing the risk of localized flooding and making travel difficult, especially during peak holiday traffic.

Showers may linger into Sunday, with forecasters also monitoring the potential for a second storm system over the weekend.

The storm is expected to move into Orange and San Diego counties and the Inland Empire late Tuesday night, with the most intense rainfall occurring from late Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night. This timeframe coincides with last-minute Christmas Eve shopping and travel, when freeways are typically crowded.

Strong winds may also accompany the system, potentially slowing or disrupting traffic along Interstate 5 and U.S. Highway 101, major coastal routes between San Diego and points north. Forecasters note the storm will move from northwest to southeast as it enters North County, with possible lightning during periods of heavy rain.

Low-lying areas that are prone to flooding could be affected.

Driving Safely in Heavy Rain—Especially on Christmas Eve
Residents planning to travel are urged to take extra precautions:

  • Slow down and increase following distance. Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping time.
  • Avoid flooded roadways. Even shallow water can stall a vehicle or sweep it off the road.
  • Use headlights in rain. This improves visibility for you and other drivers.
  • Allow extra travel time. Expect delays, especially on major freeways and near shopping centers.
  • Secure holiday packages and decorations in vehicles. Sudden stops on slick roads can cause items to shift.

Motorists are also encouraged to check weather and traffic conditions before heading out and to consider delaying non-essential travel during periods of heavy rainfall.

The City will continue monitoring conditions and encourage residents to stay informed, stay alert, and put safety first as the storm moves through the region during the holiday.

Free Sandbags
Sandbags help to divert or redirect water, mud, and debris from your property and help prevent soil erosion. Free sandbags (10 per household, sand not included) are available to Vista residents (*proof of city of Vista residency needed). The sandbags are available for pickup at the Public Works Yard, located at 1165 E. Taylor Street, Building A, during business hours: Monday-Friday, 6:00 am-4:30 pm (closed December 25 and January 1). Residents can purchase fill materials at local home centers and building supply stores.
